Meet-Up Topic: Avalanche Rescue

GENERAL INFO

TheMAC believes in stewardship among the backcountry community. In an effort to foster this philosophy we offer FREE professional mentorship for AiARE Alumni during the season on a first come, first served basis. If you have completed an AiARE Level 1 or higher you will you are eligible to register. Though this Meet-Up is free, tipping is welcomed and encouraged.

Duration: 4-6 hours

Dates: December 12, 2020

Time: 9am-3pm

Travel Mode: Ski & Splitboard

Maximum Participants: 6 Students

Location: Berthoud Pass, CO / Loveland Pass, CO

  • Meet-Up Location will be sent to accepted applicants in an email 1 week prior to meet-up

Itinerary:

  • 8am-9am: Please arrive early, ready to get started on time

  • 9am-9:30am: Introductions, Gear and Equipment Discussion

  • 9:30am–10am: Rescue review and demonstration

  • 10:30am-12:00pm: Student Learning objectives

  • 12:00pm–12:30pm: Lunch (Participants must provide their own food)

  • 12:30pm–2:30pm: Student Learning objectives

  • 2:30pm-3pm: Day Debrief

Prerequisites:

Proof of completion of an AiARE recreational course. Approved courses are as follows:

  • Level 1, Companion Rescue plus Level 1, Level 2, or Higher formal education

Students on skis or boards must be comfortable in steep blue to black terrain at the ski resort. Students should also be comfortable skiing/riding with a backpack. Students should have at least 3-5 days touring prior to meet-up.

Equipment

Touring Equipment: Participants must provide, be familiar with their touring gear and, have experience on their setup prior to taking this course. Approved modes of travel include alpine touring skis or splitboard.

Avalanche Equipment: Students MUST provide a modern 3 antenna transceiver, metal/aluminum shovel with extendable handle, and an appropriate probe between 250cm-350cm, avalanche airbags are recommended but not required.
